AXOM Gallery & Exhibition Space is honored to announce the release of a full private collection of artworks by the late artist Ramon Santiago. This is the first exhibit of its kind in 15-20 years, showcasing a collection of artworks from the most valued period in Santiago’s career.

There are fourteen works that will be on view and available for purchase.  Among these works are paintings in oil on canvas, mixed media drawings on paper, a serigraph, and a limited edition hand colored poster. Most of the works are executed in the famed sensitive, dramatic and mysterious style in which Santiago often rendered provocative women and dark humanoid creatures, creating enigmatic and exotic compositions. The collection also includes “Flowers” a still life of a vase of flowers painted in oil on canvas, not a typical subject of Santiago, but rendered still with the sensitivity and fluidity of line and compositional design known to his work. This painting in its rarity is one of the most prized works that will be on view along with ‘The Madonna” executed in his typical style during the height of his career.

The opportunity to collect signature art works from the height of Santiago’s career has not been available to the public in quite some time – to honor this opportunity the gallery will be donating a portion of the proceeds in remembrance of Ramon Santiago to Camp Good Days and Special Times, one of the many charitable causes Ramon contributed to in his lifetime.

Though not typical for AXOM Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art and artists, we wanted to honor the artist’s legacy and raise awareness of Santiago’s beautifully compelling artworks that became so highly sought after, not only in Rochester but also throughout the country.

Axom Gallery will be accepting private collector appointments for viewing the collection starting November 13, 2015; one week before the exhibit opening & reception on November 20, 2015. We will be accepting appointments throughout the duration of the exhibit.

The full collection can be viewed below.

“There is no denying the impact that Ramon Santiago has had on our community. Myself having grown up in Rochester, I witnessed Ramon Santiago becoming a household name for a community so proud of its artists. You couldn’t go anywhere or for very long without seeing one or several of his works or without meeting those who knew him well garnering respect for his vision, elegance and charity. We are proud to be able to continue his legacy.” -Margot Muto, Director of AXOM Gallery

Santiago was born September 4, 1943 and started painting in 1961 while attending San Antonio College in California. He returned to Rochester in 1963 to study at the Rochester Institute of Technology. From 1965-1968 Santiago served with the United States Marine Corps, hence the dedication to contributing works of art to Veteran charitable events which raised awareness of the challenges veterans face during and after service. It was after his discharge from service that his artistic career began for nearly a 30 year run exhibiting in national and international galleries and museums. Santiago passed away in the year of 2001 of lung cancer at 58 years old.

His work can still be found in private and institutional collections throughout the United States.

“My paintings are what dreams are made of.” -Ramon Santiago (Provided by the Ramon Santiago Studio.)
