January 22, 2106 – March 5, 2016

Opening Reception: January 22, 2016 6-10 pm

Axom Gallery & Exhibition Space is pleased to announce the long awaited exhibit “Seeing Things”, comprised of drawings and paintings by Ithaca artist Lin Price. This is the first solo exhibition of Price’s work in the Rochester area in over 15 years.

Price’s work opens up a window to the complexities of the human condition against backdrops of abstracted painterly spaces that hint towards the recognizable. The open ended narratives of struggle, desire, isolation, fear, compassion, obsession, anticipation, searching, and longing are the autobiographical themes that she infuses into the anonymous figure that she calls the “Everyman”. These states of fleeting moments of contemplation are what she hopes all viewers can identify with; the experience of reconciling our worldly states of being and desires of the soul. Her use of animals speak to the co-existence of man and nature while alluding to the “totem” asking us to pay attention, hinting towards where to look next. These works are not meant to be interpreted into reason or narrative, rather a poetic reference to the subconscious states of internal conflicts and irrational space – like dreams often do.

Price’s concerns are just as much about the intimate details of our inner psychological worlds as they are about the formal elements of painting. The loosely realistic style utilizes color, shape, line, texture, and form which reference elements from color field painters to abstract expressionists all while harkening back to the narrative themes of the Romanticist. These elements guide us as we navigate through the sub-realities and psychological landscapes that straddle the lucid divide of the dream world and real life. The outcome is a sense of the surreal in a playful, witty, unexpected and undefined aesthetic.

“Within these invented worlds, ecologies are formed by the relationships of the occupants (human, insect, animal, plant) to one another and to their surroundings. The activities and gestures of humans are often mirrored in those of animals and insects. An Everyman character is pivotal to most of the work in this ongoing series, as he tries to cope with the struggles, anticipation, longing, worry, guilt, absurdity, joy, and even wonder that life unfolds before him.” -Lin Price

Lin Price received a BFA from Ithaca College and an MFA in painting from Bard College / Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts in Annandale, New York.
